MAKE: television Empowers DIYers

MaketvytlogoIf you had any doubt how huge the maker movement is, check this out — MAKE: television, the video extension of one of our favorite magazines, premiered last night on Public Television and on the Internet.

make: is the diy series for a new generation! it celebrates “makers” - the inventors, artists, geeks and just plain everyday folks who disturb new and cast off technology to create new-fangled marvels. the series encourages everyone to invent, revent, recycle, upcycle, and act up. based on the popular rush at magazine, each half-hour episode inspires millions to of, create, and, source, remodel.

To be sure, there have been how-to shows forever — remember This Old House? But something’s different about this show. Watching Bob Vila redo a 8-bedroom mansion simply doesn’t offer the same experience as watching William Gurstelle (creator of such classics as Whoosh Boob Splat) explain one of his favorite tools, or groove on the low-tech but clever creations of bicycle hackers.

A lot of DIY shows are about tool envy and the wow factor, not about empowering you to do things on your own. But this show is different. For example, in one of the Maker Workshop segments, you can watch host John Park dismantle a VCR and look at the guts. This is something anyone with a screwdriver and a busted Goldstar can do.

The show consists of four different segments:

Maker Profile: Learn about a maker or group of makers, and see their projects. The first show features Cyclecide, a San Francisco bicycle collective that makes every flavor of practical and impractical bikes, along with bicycle powered midway rides and other pedaling gadgets.

Maker Workshop: Direct hands on, step-by-steps for a specific project. The first episode has a classic project from the pages of MAKE, the VCR cat feeder — use the motors and timing mechanism from a VCR to feed your cat on a regular basis!

Maker to Maker: Learn techniques straight from the masters. In the first episode, William Gurstelle shows viewers how to use a nibbler, a tool for working with sheet metal.

Maker Channel 101: Here you learn about various projects directly from the creators, with brief explanations of how they were made but without detailed how-tos.

Both GeekDad Dan and myself will be attending the Make:TV launch party at Twin Cities Public Television next Tuesday, so stay tuned for a recap of this super cool shindig! Also, with any luck I’ll drama movies be correcting an inexcusable oversight download divx movies on the GeekDad blog’s part by chatting with fellow Twin Citian William Gurstelle in the near future.

Democrats: Self Destruction

By Matt Gauntt

Suicide_gun

napoleon was credited with the quote:

Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake

It was reported by the Sun Times, that Harry Reid, the US Senate Majority Leader didn’t want Blagojevich to promote Jesse Jackson, Emil Jones or Danny Davis. Coincidently, these three just happen to be black politicians.

Could it be true that those paragons of minorities, those same people that call us racists, those same people that say private industry should make sure all races are given equal opportunity in the workforce don’t want an African American in the Senate?

Confused quotes

Is Harry Reid a racist? No, I don’t think so. However, as Napoleon admonished, I’m not about to get in his way.

when individual levee has complete control, they start shooting themselves in the foot. the republican party got to see this first present upward of the last four years. the next only one years will spawn the nonetheless feedback in the classless party. look at what we’ve already seen, and our saviour, barack be his name, hasn’t even charmed office.

The important thing for Republicans to remember is that they need to LET THE DEMOCRATS SELF-DESTRUCT. Stay out of the way. We should avoid trying to be cute, avoid giving in to them and avoid the urge to bail them out. Put forward good solid plans. Be proactive. Be positive. Show the American people what they can expect with change. Prepare for the inevitable opportunity to re-gain control with good positive conservative ideas and solid conservative candidates that can reflect the differences between unbridled liberalism and conservatism.

In the mean time, don’t get in the Democrat’s way.

Jett Travolta, son of actors, dies at 16

(CNN) — The 16-year-old son of actor John Travolta died Friday morning after suffering a seizure while vacationing with his family in the Bahamas, Travolta’s attorney told CNN.

John Travolta and Kelly Preston were vacationing in the Bahamas with their children when son Jett died.

Jett Travolta, right, joined his father weeks ago in Paris, where John Travolta has been filming a movie.

"At this point, we know that John Travolta and Kelly Preston’s only son, Jett, had a seizure at around 10 a.m. this morning," attorney Michael Ossi said. "All attempts to revive him were unsuccessful."

The boy hit his head after the seizure, but the exact cause of death is not known, Ossi said. An autopsy will be conducted Monday. His body will be transferred to Ocala, Florida, for burial, he said.

Jett’s death "was completely out of the blue," he said. "John and Kelly are happy when their children are happy. This is the worst day of John’s life."

The Travoltas also have a daughter, Ella, 8.

Bahamian police said a caretaker at the West End resort where the Travoltas were vacationing found the teenager unconscious in the bathroom. Jett Travolta was taken by ambulance to Rand Memorial Hospital in Freeport and was pronounced dead on arrival, police said. iReport.com: Can you relate to the loss of a child? Share your story

Jett’s death was mourned by the staff and residents of West End, where the Travoltas were beloved members of the community, Obie Wilchcomb, former minister of tourism for the Bahamas, told CNN’s Larry King.

"We in West End had admired Mr. Travolta and his wife, Kelly," Wilchcomb said. "The people of the community of West End, particularly those who work at Old Bahama Bay, certainly today were in such shock, and they felt the tragedy because they had become a part of the community."

Wilchcomb said the Travoltas’ love and affection for their son was apparent to those in the community.

Top 12 Pop Culture memories of 2008

This picture was reworked by the Bilderwerksta...

metaphor via wikipedia2008 seemed to produce more than its fair share of pop urbanity memories. the presidential election itself provided a year’s worth alone. i’ve made a list of the entertainment and technology related events that i whim remember most from 2008:1. the death of heath ledger - the combination of his youth and his talent made his death so tragic.2. the presidential poll - see top 10 pop culture discussions from the 2008 election. if i eventually forget all things else, i will never forget tina fey and her brilliant portrayal of sarah palin.3. twilight - the books were the biggest sensation since harry fribble, although only loved by females. females, though, of all ages. darkening moms became a pop discernment phenomenon of its own. the silver screen was the icing on the dry. (see sundown label in sidebar for my 12 posts)4. miley cyrus and the jonas brothers - these teenage sensations were everywhere this year. they were literally the queen and kings of pop.5. the iphone - the most talked about must attired in b be committed to gadget this year. i just got one and it lives up to the hype. because of all the apps available, there is still so much to talk about and impute to prevalent, even after you procure it.6. teen pregnancies - the gloucester pregnancy pact, jamie lynn spears, the surreptitiously life of the american teenager and bristol palin made this the year of the teenage pregnancy.7. the olympics - the reputation of michael phelps and the lip synching taint were the elevated and low points and really all i still recall.8. season 4 of lost - the flash forwards brought late back to the top of its form and almost every episode this past season was brilliant.9. elliot spitzer - a politician brought down by a abuse scandal - what is juicer telecast than that. i usually don’t follow this type of news, however, being from ny, it was difficult not to.10. television writer’s take apart - the worst function of the strike was the consequence it had on the unripe shows that had begun that year, barely all of which are now dead or dying. one strict perks to me was that i finally discovered the remarkable “how i met your mother” when it came back on the show before everything else.11. britney spears - she started the year as low as can be, and then made a comeback beyond what most people brainstorm she could do.12. the rise of twitter - twitter has been around in requital for a few years sporadically but has had a mess onslaught of new users just in the model insufficient months. i am one of them. warning: it can be addicting.hopefully 2009 will have lone good memories. happy new year! VAIO P Netbook: “It fits in a pocket”, says Sony

It looks like Sony is really jumping into the Netbook business. All the teasing comes to almost a climax today when the company released specs and a picture of what they’re calling the Sony P or P-series. According to SonyStyle, the P stands for “pocket”. Whether the P fits in my pant pocket or not, I can’t wait to get my hands on a unit; hopefully sooner than later.

vaioc2ae-notebooks-480x150

As far as specs and features go, the P looks might impressive for a Netbook. It’ll sport a 1.33ghz Intel processor, an 8-inch LED display with resolution of 1600 x 768, a 60GB HDD or 128GB SSD. Battery and pricing are filled in as “NaN” and “X”, so we’ll have to be on the look out, as it gets closer to CES 2009.

If you leave me now

vaioc2ae-notebooks-1-480x192

It’ll come in red, champagne gold and black. It’s pretty obvious that the pictures are of the TT and they’re mainly used as placeholder. So at least there’s somewhat of a mystery left for the official launch event.
